#1 Middle Class and Working Women
ReplyDeleteThere were three classes: Women of the upper class, women of the lower class, and the underclass women. None the women in any classes any power, they were difference in the daily life, family life and working life. The worst the worst class to be in was the underclass women. With no type of education these women mostly relied on organizations . Most of the women were in the lower class. Some women began working between the ages of 8 and 12. Like the underclass and lower class women were often being pick on by the wealthy society because their lives wasn't like theirs. Some of the jobs that were available to them were: domestic service, agricultural laborers, seamstress, washer women, and serving the wealthy residents.
The working condition wasn't great. People was getting paid $1.25 to $1.50 per day.The largest city would pay $2.00 per hour. They was working hard labor but barely any pay. There issues were: Long hours (60-80 hours a week) Unsafe conditions Competition from women and children who earned even less. In 1860 there was over 40% of women and children working in the factory. A women salary was $4.00 every week. Samuel Gompers wanted the Union to start a boycott, use strike weapons to increase the wages, safe working condition, and shorter hours.
Great comment. Oh I'm so glad I wasn't born back then I would have gone crazy due to the pay.

DeleteAnalyze the goals, methods, and achievements of TWO of the following organizations?
ReplyDeleteNational Labor Union
Knights of Labor
The goals, method, and achievements of the National and Knights of Labor were plentiful. First, the National Labor Union main goal was to improve working conditions through legislative reform. Also, to create a national federation that could press for labor reforms and help found national unions in those areas where none existed. The National Labor Union drew much of its support from construction unions and other groups of skilled employees, but also invited the unskilled and farmers to join. The National Labor Union made many accomplishments such as improved wages to safer working conditions to fairness and equality in the workplace.
Next, the Knights of labor was the largest and one of the most important American labor organizations of the 1880s.Their main goal was to promoted the social and cultural uplift of the workingman, reject Socialism and radicalism, demanded the eight-hour day, and promoted the producers ethic of republicanism. The Knights of Labor reached 28,000 members in 1880, and then jumped to 100,000 in 1885. Then it mushroomed to nearly 800,000 members in 1886. Membership declined due to problems of an autocratic structure, mismanagement, and unsuccessful strikes. Disputes between the skilled trades weakened the organization, but it will be remembered as one of the biggest labor unions ever made.

DeleteGood comment, you know a lot on labor.
Delete2.Analyze the goals, methods, and achievements of TWO of the following organizations:
ReplyDeleteNational Labor Union
Knights of Labor
American Federation of Labor

The National Labor Union organization favored arbitration over strikes and called for the creation of a national labor party as an alternative to the two existing parties. They achieved eight hour work day, but many government organization reduce wages at the same time they reduce hours.
2.Analyze the goals, methods, and achievements of TWO of the following organizations:
ReplyDeleteKnights of Labor
American Federation of Labor
The goals of the knights of labor was to have equal pay among everyone. they wanted to banish child labor in the 19th century kids had a lot of energy meaning that they could work long hours with a cheaper pay. They wanted to reduce how many hours the workers had to work. Some of the methods they used was strikes, boycotts, and campaigns to get their message across the globe. The achievements of the knights of labor was the Pacific railroad strike in 1884 and the Wabash railroad strike in 1885.
The goals of the american federation of labor was to shorten hours, increase wages, and rights to bargain collecting. The methods of the AFL was similar to the KL methods in a way that they used mostly strikes. The achievements of the AFL was to supported the trade unions and centralized them into a collective and harmonious force. They beaten people who tried to work there, they refused to work unless their needs were met.
1.) The industrial revolution changed the lives of women and the middle class in a major way. A lot of females began to work in factories ,they were still not given much respect at this time though. They were underpaid and had to work long hard hours .Although a lot of stress and hardship surfaced as a result of the conditions in which these women were working- long hours, little food, crowded factories, overall unsuitable conditions- for many women it was only a small change. Women had been doing large amounts of labor pre-industrial revolution. The only difference was that they were now working outside of the home, instead of out of the home.
ReplyDeleteThe middle class changed in a major way also.Almost all of the middle class contributed in the industrial revolution. This was gaining the wealth of the United States while also giving a sense of nationalism for the people of the U.S. The middle class mostly consisted of immigrants and children .They were treated about the same as women in the industry with low pay and poor working conditions. The industrial revolution was a good and bad contribution to the U.S.
you did an excellent job on the middle class and on the women. you provided great details on both of the topics.

ReplyDeleteWage Earns was the ones who work for there families and tired to stay a float. Such as immigrants who came from other countries and work jobs most Americas wouldn't work. Such as jobs that was long hours and very hard conditions in those fields. They where the men who knew they was always a pay check away from being homeless or need the next one just to survive; Also this men was force to work these jobs that paid little for so much work. The men who own the companies reeked the befits.
Middle class was the ones who had a stubble job and home. They also had jobs that was good for them and their families; these jobs support them with homes, food, transportation and other opportunities. Middle class had it good, they was able to have a jobs and live a nice stubble life.
you did an excellent job on the wage earns and the middle class. you provided great details on both of the topics.
DeleteLabor movement has always been divided over aims and tactics. Some unions wanted broad social change, others focused narrowly on "bread and butter" issues of wages, benefits, and work rules. Some unions wanted to organize all workers into industrial organizations. Others wanted to organize smaller units of skilled workers into craft organizations. The divide between these two broad approaches to the labor movement can be seen clearly in the experiences of the two most important American union leaders of the late nineteenth century.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to their disagreement about what a union should do, the two men differed on which workers should make up a union. Powderly wanted to include all workers. The Knights welcomed unskilled workers, as well as blacks and women to their ranks. Gompers remained suspicious of unskilled workers and focused on organizing only skilled craftsmen. The philosophical differences between the two men would come up again and again in labor history, sometimes to the point of tearing the movement apart.
