Welcome Blog: Class Introductions and Team Building

Welcome Back 11th Graders!!! First I would like to say I hope each and everyone had a great and restful summer. I look forward to teaching you a host of new information and several new strategies to assist you in analyzing historical data. The AP US History course is designed to give students an introductory level class for first year college readiness. The Advanced Placement course will be extremely challenging and demanding for outside readings, assessments, presentations, and essays. I am confident that the students in this course will be responsible for their workload and mature enough to handle the pressure. My ultimate goal this year is to help my students think like a historian and formulate their own perspective about events and people of American history. This course examines US History from the pre-colonial period to the current administration of President Barack Obama concentrating on the issues that our country are facing currently.

Also, list three post-seondary institutions that you are interested in and what major(s) you plan to study. Explain how the course will benefit you as a 1st/2nd year college student.  This welcome post should be at least (2) two paragraphs in length (10 sentences). (see teacher example). The blog posts are mandatory weekly and will count as 80 points.
2nd Assignment-Due 8/29/2012 by 12:00a.m. Midnight

  1. My name is Fallin Ladd and I am a Social Studies Teacher at Woodlawn High School. I am married to Mr. Brian Ladd and we have five children total and two children together. My children names are Collin and Chelslyn and I most times refer to them as My2CBL. I have been teaching for the past 7 years and I have a strong passion for history. I hold several degrees from various institutions:1) Miles College B.A. Political Science/History 2006, 2) Alabama State University M.Ed. Secondary Education/Social Sciences 2008, 3) University of Montevallo Educational Specialist Ed.S. Educational Leadership 2012. My short term goals include teaching history courses at the secondary and post-secondary level. My long term goals include organizing and managing a Child Development Center and later owning and operating a Family Funeral Home. (Different, ikr!!!)
During the summer of 2013, I attended three intensive Professional Development trainings for American History. TAH-Teaching American History Grant Project and Advanced Placement United States History. I am eager to get this course started and allowing students to develop their own perspective toward historical information. The main purpose of this course is to assist students with achieving high scores on the AP exam in May of 2014 in order to receive college credit in their American History courses. I am looking forward to working with all of my students this year and I expect success from each and every one of you!!!

  2. My name is Trey R. Hawkins and I attend Woodlawn High School Academy of Business & Finance. My interests are performing arts(specifically music), mental/social sciences, and business in a cooperate setting. My goals in a longevity consist of going to college, being a musician, traveling the world, and returning to the south (preferably Birmingham) and opening up a non-profit organization to keep the youth motivated and to learn how to beat the superficial labels others define them by.

My likes of history consist of the Age of Discovery, the Italian Renaissance, World War 1 & 2, the Reconstruction Era, and the American Revolution. These are specific areas in history that spark interest to me and I have produced my best work dealing with these eras. My dislikes of history do not pertain to any time periods of history. My dislike of history is that it's so much to take in at one time that you never get the full cover-to-cover and leave class everyday a little dumb-founded as to how everything connects. That is one of my goals to get out of AP U.S. History.

My plans for this school year are to maintain the grades I have been producing, increase my work ethic, and serve as an avid role model and leader to my fellow peers.

As for colleges I am looking at taking risks and going for schools such as Vanderbilt, Emory, the Manhattan School, and dare I say some selected Ivy League schools. (There I said it!!!) My planned major so far will be a double major of Music & Sociology with a minor in International Studies.

I look forward to working with you guys and Mrs. Ladd this school year! This school year is going to be awesome! Let's pass that AP exam!!! :D

  5. My name is Kayla Crawford. I am a junior at Woodlawn High School. I love fine arts, music, and the color pink. I have a interest in animals and nature. With saying that, one day I am going to be a veterinarian to save and rescue animals. My plans for the school year is to better myself in studying, paying more attention, and learning how to become more dedicated to my work. In the future, I will attend Jeff State to study agricultural science to become the veterinarian I wish to be. For my colleges, I am looking forward to Jeff State, Auburn University, and A&M. These three colleges will benefit me in life and knowledge because I will learn all types of skills that will come in handy.

What I like about history is learning about how our world used to be back then. It fascinates me to learn how much a single dollar was worth or how war was important at times. What I don't like about history is having to remember who did what and why. I don't have many dislikes for history but I will better myself to a greater understanding of it. I chose US AP History because that's one of my favorite school subjects, also, understanding history better will help me to learn more about my world in a more advanced way. My expectations to the class are for me to never have a excuse for anything, focus and pay attention, and to have a well balanced relationship with my teacher, Ms. Ladd. I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH EVERYONE!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!

Those three colleges would benefit me in various ways, and will inform me on some great knowledge that would help me be a great pediatrician.

History is one of those subjects that you just have to stay focused on. I like that in history I always find out information about the past that I didn't have a clue about. It gets me excited to find out about my past, because it helps gives me a clue on how the future are going to be. I dislike that in history the past can be a little boring ,and having to remember a million dates for various things.I have choosen US AP history, because I like to challenge myself to accomplish higher things in life, and also because in US AP history there is a chance I can learn more. I look forward to working with you Mrs. Ladd I have heard nothing but good things about your teaching skills from my friends!

My name is Joshua Hill and history is not really my favorite subject, but I hope to do my best to get an A in this class. There’s a lot about history that I really don’t understand, but I hope to find out a lot in your class. The things that I really don’t like about history are remembering all those dates. It gets kind of confusing when they are so close together. The things that I really love about history is when I make a good grade on a history test, because I have so much anticipation. I am really an anti-social person and really don’t like doing group activities and that’s something that I always had a problem at.
Next, the things that I really want to major in college are engineering and business. I think this class will help me with that a lot when we go over the Industrial Revolution. Also it will teach me a lot about future business opportunities. I feel at the end of the year I will understand a lot more about history than last year. I feel this class will help me create my own businesses in the future. I hope that this class will make me more successful in the future.

The reason for me choosing AP US Historybecuse its gives me more as a challenge than what I'm use to. My dislike about history is it doesn't catch my attention even when I try to get it . Even thoughit is important as far a culture and tradition etc. Its just not my cup of tea. What I like about history is it gives you more of a background infomational and the struggle our ancestors had faced. My expectations to the class are for me is to pay attention and stay focus.I want to major more in the medical field but also in the culinary field. There isn't much to tell about me because majority knows me an if ou don't DONT ASK LOL. I really hope we have a good school year and every one focus is on point. I hope we all can get along in this class. Let's have a Turnt up 1st Block AP US History.Mrs. Ladd I hopeyou enjoy us all and we will enjoy you. Let's Have HighExpectations for this class!!!!!!

  17. Hi everyone, I'm Terriya King currently a junior right now, and my favorite color is blue. Hopefully next time I introduce myself for something like this, It would be as a business owner and entrepreneur. I'm not sure what order this is suppose to be in, but I'm just going to talk. I'm a person who's always had a dream and vision of doing something positive and productive with my life. As a young child, I had to take on huge responsibilities and mature faster than other kids. I dislike drama and messy people. That's just something I don't have time for. I am very easy to get along with. I like people who have a rough background that's unnoticeable because of the way they carry themselves. I take advantage of every learning opportunity proposed to me, so that I can be prepared for the world with a knowledge and understanding of what is ahead of me. I've learn so many things through music, teachers, and people I talk to everyday; and it has helped me get through so much. Anyone that knows me, know I love me some Michael Jackson and Beyonce. Those are artists that have been my inspiration since I was little girl and I've learned a lot from them as well. There's this one song that keeps me motivated and it's called 'Higher' by Big Sean. It really motivates me to believe I can really do what I set my mind to. I'm not sure what God has planned for me in the future, but I know I have a purpose for living. My plan for this school year is to just stay focused and do the best that I can. I'm not the smartest kid, but I'm going somewhere in life. I'm undecided on what college I want to attend, but I thought about ASU (Alabama State University) or somewhere out of state. I want to broaden my horizon, so that my mom and everyone who's looking up to me can be proud and see how hard work pays off. I'm very observant and attentive. I'm a great listener and I have a way with understanding. I have a passion for sports and Accounting & Business Management. My main focus is to do what I'm suppose to do. I watch so many people get to the 12th grade and dropout. That's not an option for me. There are only a couple of people in my family who have gone off to college and I wanna change that. So many people sleep on their talents instead of doing something productive with them because they have no word of encouragement or just a lack of hope to do so. I don't wanna be like that. I've been given an opportunity to make something of myself, so I'm going to make the best out of it. Knowledge is power.

  19. In what ways did the English colonies develop differently from the Spanish and the French colonies. The England colonist had way more freedom and were able to govern themselves, as long as they follow the law and was loyal to their king. England unlike France and Spain in-forced immigration from other nations however, those regions that had been colonized by the french and Spanish remains national characteristics to this day. France and Spain were governed by autocratic sovereigns whose rule was absolute. Their colonist went to America as servants of the crown. By 1763 the English had established dominance in North America. They had victory in the french and Indian war.
